APH College AU Headcanons:  Sweden
Dw, I’ll finish the Asians before moving on to the Nordics, I just had an urge to write Swe first. Explanation post here, AU tag is #college au musings on my blog!
- Architecture and design major
- As a hobby, he makes decorative and functional wood and clay figurines and furniture designs in the Scandinavian minimalism style.
- He usually makes smol animal figurines like this because they are smooth and curved with no sharp lines, friendly looking, and add nice, subtle touches to interior spaces. (But mostly, I just really like this headcanon because of the juxtaposition between a tall, intimidating looking guy working very diligently and quietly on small arts and crafts that could even be considered cute. It’s a nice image, and I think it’s fitting for Sweden’s character.)
- Decided to open an Etsy for his crafts and stuff (might as well try to support himself with his hobby). For each piece, there’s usually only one in stock because he makes everything by hand, so there aren’t any duplicates and every item he sells is slightly different. His shop is actually a lot more popular than his freelance work (see next hc); he thinks it’s sadly ironic his hobby is more useful than what he actually plans to do for a living :’) but he usually just takes it in stride and often reminds himself that he’s lucky to even have a hobby he can support himself with, and he doesn’t mind pivoting and making a living out of his Etsy.
- Trying to work freelance as a logo/graphic designer (he is an architecture student, but I don’t think many people would hire a college kid to design their buildings yet…). He’s still building up his portfolio, so he doesn’t have many customers yet.
- Lowkey dream job is to be an IKEA designer. Before you laugh, there are only 20 designers who make ALL the products they put out each year, so I’m gonna assume it’s incredibly hard to get a spot in the club.
- Really good at focusing, even though he lives in an apartment with the other Nordics who are very cHaoTiC
- Does fika almost religiously (it’s a Swedish coffee break where you relax and talk with the people around you, catch up and stuff). He never forgets it, and usually asks or forces the other Nordics to join him. It might be because of having this daily habit, but he never gets highkey stressed.
- B+ to A+ range grades. He really picked a good major, because he has an eye for design and a knack for building things, which makes homework and projects come fairly easy. Not a big fan of essays and typing, so he usually uses the dictation tool/voice input even if it sounds like he’s talking to himself (Denmark teases him about this a lot). His English and science skills are competent, but not stellar (and he’s not really interested in those subjects either), and he’s better at history and math.
- Always finishes his assignments in a timely manner; if he’s cramming or staying up late, he’ll only need an extra hour or two to wrap up and then he’ll go to bed around 11:30-12:45
- Very healthy lifestyle. Doesn’t eat much fast food or ramen or snacks instead of actual meals, exercises moderately, usually gets enough sleep. Has his life /mostly/ together so far.
- He used to go to the school cafe for breakfast but now just makes a half sandwich from scratch: one piece of toast with vegetables and some cheese on top. For lunch he always goes to the same food place and orders the same thing every time: chicken salad without mayonnaise and a yogurt (ok I have very little knowledge of food so please suggest alternatives that are more in character)
- Eats wheat crackers as a snack (would eat Swedish crispbread instead if he could buy it)
- Knows all the tricks when using rendering and editing software, ex Blender or photoshop. Very skilled at working on the computer for digital assignments.
- He prefers to take notes by hand, and always has a couple smaller sketchbook/graph paper notebooks on him (for design ideas and structure studies) as well as a lined paper one for notes. His handwriting is rather thin and narrow but very neat (like this). Has sworn off using pen.
- He renovated the Nordics’ whole shared apartment almost right after he moved into it (at the time it was just him and Denmark in there). Remade it into a perfect example of Scandinavian minimalism, and it’s very pleasant even if the rest of the apartment building is kinda dingy However, all the Nordics have personally redecorated their bedrooms to fit their own aesthetic and Sweden has a bit of a seizure when he goes into Finland’s room and sees death metal/rock aesthetic everywhere
- Doesn’t speak often in class, but when he does, it’s a thoughtful, intriguing comment or a well planned burn
- Has a fairly good relationship with his professors; they like his work ethic, designs, and how he’s pretty mature (some of them also like his lowkey sass). He likes them as well because they aren’t very scared by his resting bitch face, and as a result he talks to them a lot and has gotten to know them well. He’s been highly recommended for internships by some of them
- He and Norway have roasting sessions as they look on at people (Denmark) doing stupid things (often while drunk)
- This has no canon context but I really want Sweden and Netherlands to be friends in this AU, so they are. They met through Denmark, and the three go biking together sometimes. Sweden is more uptight about stuff, being healthy and not being obscene in public and nOt SmOKinG NeD pls save your lungs, Ned does not care and goes right on smoking. But like, they both admire things about each other; Berwald likes Ned’s efficiency with money and how he can get along with many people (at least on a business level) and Ned is impressed with Berwald’s prowess in design. Also they are both tall and sorta intimidating and that is a good enough similarity for a foundation of friendship
- He hasn’t joined a club, but has been called by the art people, some theater people, and some other miscellaneous clubs to build props and things for them. He’s chill about it, and likes taking the odd jobs around campus (obviously he doesn’t get paid but whatever)
- Has a reputation for being intimidating and scary because he doesn’t talk much and his face definitely isn’t an open book for his feelings, but if people actually talk to him without being scared they quickly find out he can be very playful, or at least is gentle and very nice
- But he doesn’t spill all his secrets to friends obviously; he just gets more talkative and more willing to share about things he likes and is passionate about
- I mentioned before that he’s not highkey stressed much, but he does feel like his future is futile (alliteration!) sometimes and sometimes just gets tired of doing work and needs a hug
- Also, you can’t really tell if he’s angry, but his expression gets stonier and he gets more threatening. Usually happens when someone insults one of his brothers or when he sees something unfair happening

Would you be able to apply your lateral dick line magick to the other avengers? Purely for science of course
while i could, i feel that in this time of quarantine there exists an excellent opportunity for all you other cool cats and kittens to sharpen up your spatial analysis skills. the magic of math and science is that anyone can do it, so long as you have the right tools!
ok class, here’s what you will need for your experiment:
a ruler or computer application that allows you to draw and measure the length of a line. nothin’ fancy. powerpoint is great for this. a calculator with a square-root function is handy, too.
a photo of the subject male with a good Lateral Dick Line (LDL), as you mention and as explained further here. the physical principle of the LDL is ESSENTIAL to your analysis! unless they are literally naked, do not use a photo with the person standing up straight!
a photo of the subject male standing directly next to or holding an object of known size, ideally between four and 12 inches in length. the object needs to be the same distance away from the camera as the person. in the case of cevans, he was holding a regulation-sized basketball (!) right on his hip. while this was a stroke of luck (or was it luck? did he want me to figure out how much he’s packing? was he bragging?), you are unlikely to encounter quite that perfection in most photos. however, you can find something similar -- for example, an iphone:

(note: i will not be performing dick calculus on this unnamed subject male, whoever he is. from the look of him, i doubt there is anyone on this website who would be interested in knowing anyways.)
once you have the above tools, you can establish a reference scale. if the photo with the object of known width and the photo with LDL are not the same photo, you will need to find a common object/feature in both photos to use as an index. in the case of cevans, i used the distance from his cute lil belly button to the waistband of his boxers. establishing a reference scale is easy: you just need to determine how many “model units” are equivalent to one “paper unit”. here is a great youtube video on calculating scale.
after you’ve established a scale in the LDL photo, simply draw a line to measure the (presumably) flaccid length, then convert the paper unit to model units. depending on the tool you’re using to measure, you may need to utilize good old-fashioned pythagorean theorem (a^2+b^2 = c^2) to determine the length of your cock hypotenuse (i.e. the hy-cock-enuse)
as you’re establishing flaccid length, keep in mind:
there will probably be positioning complications in your LDL photo. if possible, i recommend having a real-life model available, i.e. someone with a penis (if you don’t have one), as you may have some questions about how gravity, inertia, or hip tilt affect the position of the subject dick. still, please do not make it weird with your friends and family by asking them to pull down their shorts and jump sideways! having an anatomically accurate dick model accessible to you at all times is honestly the best reason to get married, ladies.
give the man credit for the dick dimension that you can’t measure in a 2D photo! in the case of cevans, even though his LDL was mostly straight to one side, i credited him an extra 0.25″ flaccid to account for the fact that the base of his hefty manhood was facing outward from his body and towards the camera.
finally, use this chart to convert flaccid length to erect length (note your units):

All the walls are crumbling because they were never real
I’m moving into belief. I’ve spent my whole life trying to understand the nature of life and identify the construction of right and wrong, truth and illusion. It’s a fascinating process and I know I’ll never be done with it, and that’s exciting and makes life interesting. But I feel like I’ve come to a point in my process of discovery something like scientists did when they discovered quantum physics. 
In Newtonian physics everything has a cause and effect. There exists a linear relationship between action and consequence. That is true and will continue to be so forever. But Newtonian physics cannot describe everything that happens in the material world. When the scale of matter becomes really small, on the level of atoms, Newtonian physics no longer succeeds as a theory. Atoms are governed by different laws, and quantum theory, as bizarre and unintuitive as it is, continues to be proven true.
Physical reality is made up of two theories which have yet to be reconciled. Although they appear to be incompatible, compatible they must be. The physical world and everything we see with the naked eye is built on the foundation of the irrational and the impossible. The particles which we are made of can move within and without time, be in two places at the same time, and seemingly violate the universal speed limit--the speed of light. Particles can be physical matter which take up space in the physical world, and at the same time, be a wave--like a radio wave if you will. Somehow reality is built upon this impossibility.

As modern humans, we are in a precarious place. A detached place. Our roots are no longer in the soil of the earth which gives us life. We are living in the world of biological theory, political theory, economic theory, etc.--which all function very well and have allowed us to advance incredibly once understood and applied. What is the logical conclusion from this process?
We learn natural laws that we might better understand spiritual laws.
I remember in the first computer science class I took at university, my teacher drew a picture on the board, something like the following...

And then he asked the question, “What’s missing?”. He answered his own question by saying “antimatter”. Then he filled in the “antimatter” absent from view, something like this...

Note: I’m a bad artist but I tried to draw the inverse of what was originally visible. 
So what’s the logical conclusion of reality? Reality is a paradox. There’s always a catch.
Note: The teacher then went on to name laughter as an example of something behaving like antimatter. In this regard, we can theorize that antimatter comes in to play where we have inflection points. That’s useful to think about in the context of the choices we make, day by day.
Note 2: Antimatter, which cannot be seen, “refers to sub-atomic particles [that] have properties opposite those of normal matter.” It’s useful to note that this is in the quantum world, where perhaps, we could say that everything there is existing simultaneously.
I think the first paradox was in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were commanded to multiply and replenish the earth. They were also commanded not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The problem which may not be obvious depending on your brand of Christianity is that Adam and Eve apparently could not keep both commandments at the same time. They were in a state of innocence and could not procreate without first creating the fall through eating of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 
I’ve heard it said that what may appear to be contradictory to us is not to God, and that somehow He can balance two conditions in perfect harmony which appear mutually exclusive. I don’t know how God could do it in the example of the Garden of Eden, but I do think we should learn to try it in other areas.
I am nothing. I am everything.
Helaman 12:7 O how great is the nothingness of the children of men; yea, even they are less than the dust of the earth.
John 10:34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, “You are gods”’?
Through the course of a day we may need to remind ourselves of either of these quotes. What’s important is that we have to choose to put the concept into use in order to humble or inspire ourselves as needed. We have to draw up the belief then let it guide.
All truth is paradox.
My brother once responded to the above statement by saying that the paradox of truth serves as the fuel for free agency. That is an extremely instructive comment, which makes me think of Einstein’s dissatisfaction with the then emerging theory of quantum physics. When Einstein analyzed and documented the workings of the universe, he did so from the perspective of trying to understand the mind of God. He disbelieved the theory of quantum mechanics presented by Niels Bohr; the same theory that today continues to be scientifically verifiable. What he objected to was that in this explanation of the universe, the natural world became a lot more random. It seemed to diminish the role of the Master Designer. Einstein’s famous quote was “God does not play dice (with the universe)”.
I sometimes think that quantum physics only appears mysterious and random to us because we cannot see the complete picture, we are only seeing the effects of things in the physical world and perhaps there are other counterparts like antimatter that we can’t see (but can detect) and even beyond that, other counterparts we can’t even detect with clever testing.
On the other hand, there is beauty in accepting the concept of an “uncreate Reality” that can represent the quantum state. We in the Newtonian state have become the created Reality which “shows forth in our beings the uncreate Reality.” That is to say, our physical world and our physical selves are manifestations of the uncreated reality. 
Alma 30:44 ...all things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator...
What we see here in this world is a manifestation of God and the uncreate Reality beyond. Said in different words we have the following:
“For the Source of All Life created the worlds by dividing Its Unmanifest Unity into the manifesting Duality, and we that are created show forth in our beings the uncreate Reality. Each living soul has its roots in the Unmanifest and draws thence its life, and by going back to the Unmanifest we find fulness of life.“
The uncreated reality represents a primordial place from which the physical world is drawn into being from. This place we could liken to the quantum state. I make this comparison because when we can understand a concept in the real world, it helps us to have the faith or belief to put it into practice for our own benefit.
To address Einstein’s concerns, quantum mechanics may actually be evidence of God’s will to give us more free agency by providing an uncreate Reality with which we can interact. For one, It provides some “randomness” whereby everything that happens is not simply a predestined linear result of cause and effect--thereby, we cannot blame every thing that happens as a direct consequence of God’s original first act of creation (whereby He would have known the exact consequences of every single thing to ever happen, and the only intrigue in all of it would be our discovery of the result). Secondly, and more importantly, the interconnection of the quantum and Newtonian world can become for us a primordial wellspring from which we too can create. I am suggesting that it is belief and faith which allows us to materialize things in the physical world. Even as God himself does. 
Hebrews 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God...
Lastly, the context of reality, or truth being a paradox further bolsters free agency because it provides choice, even as it did for our first parents. The choices you choose to make are based on what you first choose to believe. In the paradox, you are able to believe whichever aspect you choose to focus on because it also has basis in reality.
I don’t speak of the choice between good and evil, but rather the choice between beliefs. Belief is a tool you can use to do good or harmful things.
I think it’s important to iterate that prerogative is a part of free agency and choice. 
Doctrine and Covenants 58:27 Verily I say, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness.
We know we should do many good things of our own free will and choice but those choices will naturally be more oriented to our own dispositions. The challenge is not to confuse limiting beliefs about ourselves with what is our true nature and disposition. In fact, what I am getting at is that we should use faith and belief to overcome our limitings habits, beliefs and worldview.
I reckon that beliefs become powerful as they connect to internal desire. Since that is the case, it is instructive to follow the path of our own personal orientation and if there are lessons to be learned, we will learn them much, much faster if we are making the choice for ourselves rather than merely trying to follow someone else’s instruction. That’s because belief is the thing that supercharges our experience.
With belief in play we can properly channel the “why” to our actions and attendant effects in the real world. If we err, the “why” will be there to make clear the error of our ways. Notwithstanding, in the middle of all of this is God’s intervention to steer us from unneeded error if we stray off course, and which can be greatly aided by our responsiveness to His Spirit. 
Let’s introduce something which is not a paradox but tends to be polemic.
Brigham Young said that “we live far beneath our privileges” because we fail to seek and receive the guidance the Lord wants to give us in our spiritual and temporal affairs.
This instruction is meant to help us lay claim to what might be ours but it can also paralyze us if we don’t engage with the belief that we will actually receive it. Successfully gaining access to guidance from the Lord is usually based on the belief and faith we put into it. The important thing is that we need to use belief to create the reality and then it follows that we will receive the guidance. However, we also have to put belief and faith into a great many other things of which we proceed with in lieu of guidance because...
Doctrine and Covenants 58:26 For behold, it is not meet that I should command in all things...
We must build and develop our ability to seek and understand guidance from the Lord but most times His guidance works like a signpost as we navigate. It helps us stay on course but there are a million decisions we must make for ourselves along the way by “using [our] best judgement”. 
In my experience the contrast between God having a personal prerogative and objective in the management of choices and not having a prerogative is plainly evident in the line between church affairs and private affairs. When it comes to the administration of callings and duties within the Church I have witnessed an extremely high level of involvement from the Lord. If you pay attention you can see that He is almost constantly involved and directing. The Lord really, really cares about His work. 
As soon as you move away from the realm of the administration of His Church, guidance is much more sparse. It truly feels like our personal lives are meant to be a learning experience through trial and error--a sort of experimentation. It does help us develop our own capabilities bit by bit. When you think about it, that really makes more sense anyways. Perhaps it also allows us to make mistakes without the additional condemnation we might receive if we had access to more from beyond the veil. 
On the other hand, as I consider what will happen in the future as the world is thrown into turmoil and we all begin the work of building Zion I reckon that the line between church affairs and private affairs will become almost indecipherable--and I know that there will be an abundance of guidance as such in order to complete God’s work. There is something to be said for living like that already, here and now.
Gospel of Thomas 22: When you make the two into one, and when you make the inner like the outer and the outer like the inner, and the upper like the lower, and when you make male and female into a single one, so that the male will not be male nor the female be female...
The world is separating from a longstanding known reality. Social systems are being dismantled with an intention to reengineer them. Truth and science have become weaponized. We are dependent on technology more and more. Algorithms and big data will rule our lives. Breakages will occur. Power grids will be threatened. IT infrastructure will be compromised. Natural resources will become scarce. There will be natural disasters. Financial systems will collapse. Some of these things will be unplanned, others intentional.
I’ve always thought it so peculiar the human creature existing on this planet. All the animals on the earth have been endowed with instincts which directly provision their survival. Many young animals are taught survival skills during infancy, that is true, but even if they lose their mother, their instincts will guide them the rest of the way.
Humans on the other hand are nearly helpless without the knowledge passed on from generation to generation. At this point we’ve already lost our connection to mother earth. In our quest to master nature we have also sought to remove ourselves from nature--mother nature and also what we might call human nature.   
As the walls crumble around us and the very ground is swept from under our feet, our only choice is to evolve and learn to fly.
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.”
Faith and belief will enable many to do things which we previously knew to be impossible in the Newtonian world. To evolve means to move beyond the structures (spiritual and otherwise) we have upheld for sake of dogma. Those structures will be shaken. God’s work will not fail but we are to learn not to look beyond the mark. Ultimately, to evolve will result in having our natures changed into that resembling God as we learn to create/do through faith and belief. 
For those whose trust remains in the shifting sands of the world’s social, economic, political and even scientific structures--they will be left without root and branch to stand on. 
We’ll have to act for ourselves rather than be acted upon.  We have to use faith and belief to power those actions or else it will be hollow inside and our hearts will ultimately fail us.
Luke 21:26 Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth...
Let’s go back to the world of very small particles...
If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed...

Matthew 17:19-20 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
I’ve always thought it so curious that basically the whole point of our existence on this earth is to learn to exercise faith and belief. Before we can really do anything, the important first step is starting with a real belief that we can do the thing we set out to do. When we supercharge our actions with belief, the universe responds. 
I posit that we on this earth are here to learn to become co-creators with God--creating through faith just as God does.
Sometimes we are able to energize belief through our belief in others, but it’s not always enough, as I believe was the case with the disciples of Jesus referenced in the example above and Oliver Cowdery desiring to participate in translating the Book of Mormon. 
Doctrine and Covenants 9:11 Behold, it was expedient when you commenced; but you feared, and the time is past, and it is not expedient now;
Let it be noted that this was free agency in action, since it wasn’t in the original design of God that Oliver Cowdry participate in the translation, but it would have been permitted if he had faith enough.
Because God wanted Joseph to translate, He gave him extra strength to be able to do it.
Doctrine and Covenants 9:11 For, do you not behold that I have given unto my servant Joseph sufficient strength, whereby it is made up?
To aid with the translation of the Book of Mormon Joseph received special seer stones called the Urim and Thummim. What’s curious is that Joseph often used his own seer stone rather than strictly relying on the Urim and Thummim. Eventually Joseph had enough faith to do without seer stones altogether as he continued to receive revelations. I believe that the Urim and Thummim were there to build his belief and make up for his strength until he was able to fully energize belief in himself, his ability.
Believe that you have received it, and it will be yours
One thing that hurts belief is by having a narrow view based on the here and now. When we think of how things are supposed to happen in the Newtonian world we limit the power of the supernatural quantum, timeless uncreate Reality which is boundless. We have to allow for the uncreate Reality, unintuitive non-Newtonian world to intercede. We connect to this state though the particle of belief.
As long as I believe in myself I find I can do certain things. If I ceased to believe in myself, I think I should just crumble into dust, like an unwrapped mummy.
I have said all of this in order to say this, we need to use belief daily in order to shape our lives in the way that we truly wish them to be. Our lives have ended up the way they are precisely because of the beliefs we have engaged about ourselves, others and the nature of reality. If you say that you belief that life can be grand and beautiful but you spend your days dejected and depressed, then you aren’t engaging the grand and beautiful beliefs. Whether we like it or not, beliefs are constantly directing our lives. 
“The basic difference between an ordinary man and a warrior is that a warrior takes everything as a challenge, while an ordinary man takes everything either as a blessing or a curse.”
There are indeed blessings and curses in our lives but we cannot ascribe our current condition to merely a result of those two things. In addition, we need to enlarge the gratitude we feel for the blessings and overlook where possible the curses. Feeling gratitude will enlarge our beliefs and strengthen the conduit between us and the Divine.
When we engage in belief in order to shape and direct our lives we cannot merely state a belief and then forget about it. We have to return to the belief day after day.
I have been reading about 45 books a year for the last 5 years. I set a goal on a website which helps track my progress and keeps me motivated. The first year I started the reading challenge I set my goal as 100 books for the year. I didn’t have experience and I didn’t really know what that meant though. It was an idle, pie in the sky wish. I didn’t return to the goal frequently. I forgot about it most of the year and I finished with 33 books that year.
That reminds me of Oliver Cowdry’s wish to participate in the translation of the Book of Mormon. If he had more experience or at least consistent belief he could have succeeded. The same was true of me. Experience does help, in so far as it helps to reduce fear since we have better bearings on the task before us. Perhaps fear is like antimatter.
That’s the tricky thing with belief and faith. If we have enough faith we could actually move mountains. But most of us probably don’t have enough belief to make that happen. But we could and that promise is available for us, but perhaps we misunderstand something about belief. 
Mark 11:23-24 (NIV) Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
The NIV translation makes more clear something which has caught on with new age spirituality, like in books such as The Secret, and others which profess the power of manifesting in our lives by using the so-called law of attraction.
New age spirituality has brought us the power of meditation and living mindfully, which have slowly come into mainstream Christianity and that includes the LDS church. 
And indeed, meditation and mindfulness are key parts of nurturing belief as I am prescribing. The current problem we have with incubating belief is that, as mentioned above, we already have many beliefs which are like weeds choking out the good belief that we want to use to empower our lives. From the mathematical point of view, an artificial neural network corresponds to a non- linear transformation of some inputs into certain outputs. Many types of neural networks have been proposed and studied in the literature and the Hopfield-type network has be- come an important one due to its potential for applications in various fields of daily life.
A neural network is a network that performs computational tasks such as associative memory, pattern recognition, optimization, model identification, signal processing, etc. on a given pattern via interaction between a number of interconnected units characterized by simple functions. From the mathematical point of view, an artificial neural network corresponds to a nonlinear transformation of some inputs into certain outputs. There are a number of terminologies commonly used for describing neural networks. Neural networks can be characterized by an architecture or topology, node characteristics, and a learning mechanism [1]. The interconnection topology consists of a set of processing elements arranged in a particular fashion. The processing elements are connected by links and have weights associated with them. Each processing elements is associated with:
• A state of activation (state variable)
• An output function (transfer function)
• A propagation rule for transfer of activation between processing elements
• An activation rule, which determines the new state of activation of a processing element from its inputs weight associated with the inputs, and current activation.
Neural networks may also be classified based on the type of input, which is either binary or continuous valued, or whether the networks are trained with or without supervision. There are many different types of network structures, but the main types are feed-forward networks and recurrent networks. Feed-forward networks have unidirectional links, usually from input layers to output layers, and there are no cycles or feedback connections. In recurrent networks, links can form arbitrary topologies and there may be arbitrary feed- back connections. Recurrent neural networks have been very successful in time series prediction. Hopfield networks are a special case of recurrent networks. These networks have feedback connections, have no hidden layers, and the weight matrix is symmetric.
Neural networks are analytic techniques capable of predicting new observations from other observations after executing a process of so-called learning from existing data. Neural network techniques can also be used as a component of analysis designed to build explanatory models. Now there is neural network software that uses sophisticated algorithms directly contributing to the model building process.
In 1943, neuro physiologist Warren McCulloch and mathematician Walter Pitts [2] wrote a paper on how neurons might work. In order to describe how neurons in the brain might work, they modeled a simple neural network using electrical circuits. As computers be- came more advanced in the 1950’s, it was possible to simulate a hypothetical neural net- work. In 1982, John Hopfield presented a paper [3]. His approach was to create more useful machines by using bidirectional lines. The model proposed by Hopfield, also known as Hopfield’s graded response neural network, is based on an analogue circuit consisting of capacitors, resistors and amplifiers. Previously, the connections between neurons was only one way. At the same years, scientist introduced a “Hybrid network” with multiple layers, each layer using a different problem-solving strategy.
Now, neural networks are used in several applications. The fundamental idea behind the nature of neural networks is that if it works in nature, it must be able to work in computers. The future of neural networks, though, lies in the development of hardware. Research that concentrates on developing neural networks is relatively slow. Due to the limitations of processors, neural networks take weeks to learn. Nowadays trying to create what is called a “silicon compiler”, “organic compiler” to generate a specific type of integrated circuit that is optimized for the application of neural networks. Digital, analog, and optical chips are the different types of chips being developed.
The brain manages to perform extremely complex tasks. The brain is principally com- posed of about 10 billion neurons, each connected to about 10,000 other neurons. Each neuronal cell bodies (soma) are connect with the input and output channels (dendrites and axons). Each neuron receives electrochemical inputs from other neurons at the dendrites. If the sum of these electrical inputs is sufficiently powerful to activate the neuron, it transmits an electrochemical signal along the axon, and passes this signal to the other neurons whose dendrites are attached at any of the axon terminals. These attached neurons may then fire. It is important to note that a neuron fires only if the total signal received at the cell body exceeds a certain level. The neuron either fires or it doesn’t, there aren’t different grades of firing. So, our entire brain is composed of these interconnected electro- chemical transmitting neurons. This is the model on which artificial neural networks are based. Thus for, artificial neural networks haven’t even come close to modeling the complexity of the brain, but they have shown to be good at problems which are easy for a human but difficult for a traditional computer, such as image recognition and predictions based on past knowledge.
Fundamental difference between traditional computers and artificial neural networks is the way in which they function. One of the major advantages of the neural network is its ability to do many things at once. With traditional computers, processing is sequential– one task, then the next, then the next, and so on. While computers function logically with a set of rules and calculations, artificial neural networks can function via Equation, pictures, and concepts. Based upon the way they function, traditional computers have to learn by rules, while artificial neural networks learn by example, by doing something and then learning from it.
Hopfield neural networks have found applications in a broad range of disciplines [3-5] and have been studied both in the continuous and discrete time cases by many researchers. Most neural networks can be classified as either continuous or discrete. In spite of this broad classification, there are many real-world systems and natural processes that behave in a piecewise continuous style interlaced with instantaneous and abrupt changes (impulses). Periodic dynamics of the Hopfield neural networks is one of the realistic and attractive modellings for the researchers. Hopfield networks are a special case of recurrent networks. These networks have feedback connections, have no hidden layers, and the weight matrix is symmetric. These networks are most appropriate when the input can be represented in exact binary form. Signal transmission between the neurons causes time delays. Therefore, the dynamics of Hopfield neural networks with discrete or distributed delays has a fundamental concern. Many neural networks today use less than 100 neurons and only need occasional training. In these situations, software simulation is usually found sufficient. Expected and optimistic development on all current neural network’s technologies will improve in very near future and researchers develop better methods and network architectures.
In the present paper, we briefly summarized historical background as well as developments of the artificial neural networks and present recent formulations of the continuous and discrete counterpart of a class of Hopfield-type neural networks modeling using functional differential equations in the presence of delay, periodicity, impulses and finite distributed delays. Combining some ideas of [4,6-10] and [11], we obtain a sufficient condition for the existence and global exponential stability of a unique periodic solution of the discrete system considered.

An artificial neural network (ANN) is an information processing paradigm that is in- spired by the way biological nervous systems, such as the brain, process information sees more details [12] and references given therein. It is composed of a large number of highly interconnected processing elements (neurons) working in unison to solve specific problems. ANNs, like people, learn by example. An ANN is configured for a specific application, such as pattern recognition or data classification, through a learning process. Learning in biological systems involves adjustments to the synaptic connections that exist between the neurons. This is true of ANNs as well.
The first artificial neuron was produced in 1943 by the neurophysiologist Warren McCulloch and the logician Walter Pitts [2]. But the technology available at that time did not allow them to do too much. Neural networks process information in a similar way the human brain does. The network is composed of a large number of highly interconnected processing elements (neurons) working in parallel to solve a specific problem. Neural net- works learn by example. Much is still unknown about how the brain trains itself to process information, so theories abound. An artificial neuron is a device with many inputs and one output (Figure 1). The neuron has two modes of operation; the training mode and the using mode. In the training mode, the neuron can be trained to fire (or not), for particular input patterns. In the using mode, when a taught input pattern is detected at the input, its associated output becomes the current output. If the input pattern does not belong in the taught list of input patterns, the firing rule is used to determine whether to fire or not. An important application of neural networks is pattern recognition. Pattern recognition can be implemented by using a feed-forward (Figure 2) neural network that has been trained accordingly. During training, the network is trained to associate outputs with in- put patterns. When the network is used, it identifies the input pattern and tries to output the associated output pattern. The power of neural networks comes to life when a pattern that has no output associated with it, is given as an input. In this case, the network gives the output that corresponds to a taught input pattern that is least different from the given pat- tern. Hopfield-type neural networks are mainly applied either as associative memories or as optimization solvers. In both applications, the stability of the networks is prerequisite. The equilibrium points (stable states) of networks characterize all possible optimal solutions of the optimization problem, and stability of the network’s grantee the convergence to the optimal solutions. Therefore, the stability is fundamental for the network design. As a result of this fact the stability analysis of the Hopfield-type networks has received extensive attention from the many researchers, [4,6-9,11,13] and references given therein. The above neuron does not do anything that conventional computers do not already do. A more sophisticated neuron (Figure 3) is the McCulloch and Pitts model (MCP). The difference from the previous model is that the inputs are ‘weighted’, the effect that each input has at decision making is dependent on the weight of the particular input. The weight of an input is a number which when multiplied with the input gives the weighted input. These weighted inputs are then added together and if they exceed a pre-set threshold value, the neuron fires. In any other case the neuron does not fire. In mathematical terms, the neuron fires if and only if

The MCP neuron has the ability to adapt to a particular situation by changing its weights and/or threshold. Various algorithms exist that cause the neuron to ‘adapt’; the most used ones are the Delta rule and the back-error propagation. The former is used in feed-forward networks and the latter in feedback networks.
Neural networks have wide applicability to real world business problems. In fact, they have already been successfully applied in many industries. Since neural networks are best at identifying patterns or trends in data, they are well suited for prediction or forecasting needs including sales forecasting, industrial process control, customer research, data validation, risk management, target marketing.
ANN are also used in the following specific paradigms: recognition of speakers in communications; diagnosis of hepatitis; recovery of telecommunications from faulty software; interpretation of multi-meaning Chinese words; undersea mine detection; texture analysis; three-dimensional object recognition; hand-written word recognition; and facial recognition.

Maybe I wasn’t a gifted genius who was highly sensitive and afflicted with the contrasting “ADHD or Attention Deficit Primaily Inattentive” which could only be “treated” (as far as I had experienced), via heavy duty schedule 8 drugs. My life was a focal point for the goal I set to help women with the “borderline stigma” after I had fixed my own borderline.
Clinical psychologist was my end game until I found the trauma truth sweeping me into a existential soul contusion merged with trauma after trauma therapy went into flooding memory. Academic research and the psychology and counseling journals I spent my spare time fine combing. For answers. For my why and how. I’ve had many a name for the potential inspiration from my true will calling. But I can now forget about the archaic bonds from the academic world I was schooled to excel in by confirming. I am also a high iq gifted kid and having been labelled gifted but “adhd” simultaneously while having traumatic events left right and center is a mix of confusion for me. Teachers classed adhd as a learning disability, my in attention confused with inability to listen to simple tasks. This meant my mind never adapted to that school conditioning but my education was still installed due to the private school system somehow making my alters succeed without effort. Most of my spare time as a kid that wasn’t dissociative was reading books. By me processing my own literature in my spare time, I knew so much random stuff but hid it in order to seem dumb bc that was accepted. But in private in encyclopaedias and non fictional library quests I’d devour books. for my 10 maximum haul of borrowing books. This was a routine my mum and I went to do each week but my reading speed was beyond anything known, as I read and synthesised up to 10 books mostly in one day, from age 6 onwards.
I also stole books and hid my reading habits at school due to a deep shame of not being liked due to reading being for losers without friends, as girls bullied me over my gifted weird quirks. I was pretty but saw my self as ugly for trauma will deprive the mind of seeing it’s own true perception. I was never understood how my looks became a thing used against me by girls who were jealous until I learnt about this myself. I recently accepted and remembered this all after 3 years of integrated healing. I was doing this all on my own. the spiritual and metaphysical work is my primary tool that was keeping me here. Actually saving my suicide program from self destruct after the March 2017 incident I shall not talk about now. But I’m here now, alive, kicking, Saturn here to shove my shadow to consciousness without prompt and this change can bring me into a 30 year blueprint of setting things right.
Now in order to build a solid and functional framework and foundational life. I have a litany of secrets I need to get off my chest. I think to share my growth, my thoughts and my experiences for my own liberation of my deep dark secrets finally free to be released into the public domain.
I have no choice but to share this.
I do this co consciously as a part of my integrative process.
Maybe One day it might be a guide for someone who was as alone as I feel doing all of this self work without support. Maybe it will fade into the cyber void forever. Maybe I’ll use this as a tool to help clients in the future. Whatever this is means nothing but what the process of alchemy can do to forge my liberation from soul loss and traumatic dissociative trauma.
As a therapist I always wanted to avoid what I went through growing up. Now more so. I never want another lost dissociative mental health client who was also stuck between professional and academic pursuits being my “purpose” and having to sacrifice career and my study and research to sit in my shadow to see the shit.
In order to break the shit therapist mould I list journey through my own shit first. This meant I needed to be away from all therapy both as a client and practitioner and student for awhile. I’ve been off since the end of 2017 and now it’s clear it was neeed, how do I heal without healing my own shit first? Am I not the finest example of how bad therapists can get away with their bullshit and be paid for it but never really know who they are. I’m never doing that. I never was about that. So due to therapeutic negligence. I am finding my gift was the lesson. Those a shitty therapist who are a dime a dozen were the anti mentors I saw too often: but my purpose was to be a therapist. But a therapist who did things the way I never had.
Never did I want another to go into the heavy weight of shame from the secrets of sexual wounds, childhood schemas, mixed up and messed up conditioning made to seem functional to outsiders. But that was all alters. Now it was a spiritual journey as magick and my mystical path entwines to save my soul. The self awakening, trauma revelations, merging with the dark night of soul, and the shadow work. Plus everything else coming out is not a journey I can say is or was at all easy, I suffer more now as a co conscious intergrating my trauma. I feel it all without the dissociative switch to save me from witnessing all the shit. Now I see my entire life and it’s fucked up raw and grim reality and I have to do something because I survived it this far? Again I never suicided or stopped into self destruction when I knew my own inner child’s wounds were no longer blacked out but burning bright longing for love. Symptoms for survival and the survival was part of the dissociative switching making my outside self seem so functional, but never seen. It’s not something they needed to drug me for, but it’s another thing I have to address now. My symptoms they drugged with medications that were mind altering and powerful for anyone let alone a developing child’s brain, were suppressed by many meds. Who knows where that ends and the damage via trauma and other things begin? It’s a mess of some thing I was never aware of but always trying to silence due to the need for people to accept me. But that was many mes all living a life that appeased many people, but not for me. Here we are.

However, teaching computer science in a traditional way may not be possible in all settings. We studied a method to integrate computational thinking, the ability to express problems and their solutions to a computing device, into an existing science classroom with the goal of deepening learning in both science and computational thinking in a low-resource setting in Nepal. In this note, we present findings from the study. The proposed curricular method acknowledges local differences and presents a way to adapt to those differences through adaptable multiple layers of activities and representational variability. These elements and the matches between them, that is, the way the underlying infrastructural resources can be used, constitute the prospects for attaining success [1, 6]. Some prior ICTD work has focused on enabling the use of the underlying infrastructure, for example, by providing educational games in mobile phones outside of schools [5], delivering content through mobile phones [2], blending online and in-person instruction [3], and exploring a technology-centered tutoring system [8]. This note takes the exploration of the use of technology in context to a deeper level. It presents a method of introducing computers with the joint goals of (1) deepening understanding of science and (2) promoting computational thinking. Computational thinking (CT) is the ability to “formulate problems and their solutions so that the solutions are represented in a form that can effectively be carried out by an information-processing agent" [15]. In a simplified form, CT is being able to think like a computer scientist. There is a growing consensus among educators about CT as a necessary skill permeating many domains [15]. Likewise, studies have posited the importance placed on computers and their perceived value by public in rural settings [9]. Despite these interests in computing, little is known about how to adapt materials and practices to create conditions of receptivity. Barriers include highlevel “wicked problems" [11] like gender bias [9], the benefit of connecting abstract computational ideas to actual life experiences [7], and the need to avoid implying that the only path to learning is through regular access to computer technology. An overly computer-centric perspective on learning may be discouraging to those who do not and cannot have regular access. Students’ varying backgrounds, interests and aspirations require teaching high-order thinking like CT with local adaptation in low-resource settings. The curricular approach we advocate utilizes multiple representations, both on and off the computer, combining the introduction of CT with recognizable components of education, in this case, Biology/Chemistry, that give students access to different facets of knowledge required to have deep understandings. In doing this, we also focus on the strengths of in-classroom, face-to-face instruction. We have designed an integrated curriculum in which the teacher moves students through experiences with multiple representations of a science phenomenon. As shown in Table 1, some of the representations are on paper, some are student created or modified, some represent science through animated, playable simulations, and some represent science through programming code. The instruction is governed by a driving question, in this case, “where does the carbon go" during photosynthesis and carbohydrate catabolism. The curriculum directs the students towards inquiry about the chemical basis of biological processes. 2 STUDY 2.1 School Setting We conducted our study in a school, established in 2013, 14 kms from Kathmandu, Nepal, that aims to provide interest-based education1. Despite a focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), the school adheres to the central government’s syllabus, with instruction primarily delivered in English. The school recruits and boards students from several rural areas of the country, most of them from families with limited financial resources. During the 2016-17 school year, 125 co-ed students ranging from 6-16 years 1http://news.mit.edu/2015/help-rebuild-bloom-nepal-school-destroyed-earthquakes-0612 old were enrolled. Sixteen (9 female, 7 male) were enrolled in the 7th grade and participated in this study. Although the setting is rural, from a Nepalese point of view, the school is fairly accessible through public transport and has Internet connectivity. The school had three functioning computers in a room with battery backup, access to which was restricted to students in 9th and 10th grade. 2.2 Curricular Approach We conducted a two-week long intervention, involving 35 instructional hours. A Nepali author of this note led the instruction, with support from the local science teacher. There were four computers in the class including one of the author’s laptop, which meant each computer was to be shared by four students. To mitigate inequality in engagement and learning experience when sharing a computer [10], students discussed their plans in groups prior to working on the computer. We also asked students to rotate their position while working on the computer. The science content in the module adhered to the national 7th science curriculum to teach photosynthesis and the natural carbon cycle. The left-most part of Figure 1 shows the level of instruction students had received. Our module tied that level of representation to the chemical processes involved in photosynthesis and carbohydrate catabolism in animals. This approach opens up the idea of conservation of matter which can lead to the introduction and balancing of related chemical equations. The representations utilized during the intervention, their affordances, and the objects and processes they illustrated are listed in Table 1. Students first worked on an introductory simulation that had simple representation of familiar, macroscopic real-world phenomenon. In this representation, plants grew, cows moved around, and the sun shined. The cows ate plants and died if there were no plants. By changing sliders and buttons, students could explore the relationship between the number of plants, the number of cows, and longevity. They moved into exploration of the microscopic phenomena by displaying hugely exaggerated representations of carbon forms and their transformation through different chemical processes (see the center image in Figure 1). Students worked in groups of four to create their own representations: posters they drew and described what they thought was going on in the simulation. They presented the poster to the class for discussion. Other, more standard scientific representations were presented via the “science fact sheet", a single-page document with verbal descriptions, chemical formulas and illustrative pictures that highlighted some of the science concepts. A last set of representations were introduced through exposure to the code that implemented the simulation. This enabled the important idea that the expression of objects could be modified by writing commands and blocks of code. Students studied snippets of the code to understand the model, and subsequently discussed and implemented an extension of the model by writing code. 2.3 System Description A central part of the curriculum involves working with an animated digital simulation of the natural carbon cycle, and interacting with the macroscopic and microscopic representations of the natural carbon cycle implemented using agent-based modeling in NetLogo Case for Integrating Computational Thinking and Science in a Low-Resource Setting ICTD ’17, November 16–19, 2017, Lahore, Pakistan Figure 1: Textbook representation of the phenomenon (left), the overlay of microscopic and macroscopic representations that we presented during our intervention (center), and one group’s drawing of the science phenomena (right) [14]. The simulation runs in any Internet browser and therefore does not require local software installation. In general, the system is a single page web application in which the simulation and modeling are executed on the client side once the first page loads. Therefore, the system is established through a simple local HTTP server and does not depend on Internet connectivity. However, for the study, we recorded log entries of student interaction with the computer so we served the web application through a remote server and this required Internet connectivity. 2.4 Data Collection and Analysis After engaging in an IRB-approved consent process at the beginning of the intervention, we conducted an attitudinal assessment to evaluate students’ self-confidence with, interest in, values for, and identification with computing. Use of the simulation was logged including keystrokes and interface-based changes. Student worksheets and posters were collected for analysis. We also conducted a post-performance assessment. Posters and free-text comments about attitudes were analyzed using a grounded theory approach [12] by researchers familiar with the project, including the authors. Themes emerging from the content and pictorial depiction were identified and discussed, and possible alternative conceptions were identified as well. Variation in student activity with the computers was analyzed through log data. Furthermore, post-performance assessment was evaluated against an established rubric to measure the students’ understanding of science and CT. A few emergent findings are reported here. 3 FINDINGS 3.1 Interest in Computing and Apprehension Students had played mobile games but were unfamiliar with the concepts of simulation and modeling. Previous use of computers was confined to two students who had typed in Microsoft Word and drawn in Microsoft Paint a few times. Most had seen others use computers but had never actively used one. Despite the limited exposure to computing, most students held it in esteem. A student ([S7]) wrote, “I think computing is very important for all of us because now days [nowadays] most of the people depends [depend] on computing for their work." While students were interested and excited, they were also initially apprehensive. Three groups hesitated to change slider values during the initial exploration out of fear of “making the system go bad". 3.2 Summary of Key Science Learning Observations • The students used mechanistic phrases like “throw out carbon dioxide" and “take in oxygen" but weren’t familiar with the random motion of molecules. The simulation encouraged students to inquire about movement of molecules and the right conditions necessary for reactions to occur. • Students knew that air contained carbon-dioxide and that its chemical formula was CO2. However, none of the students could use the formula to conclude that carbon-dioxide contains one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms. The microscopic representation of carbon-dioxide molecule that showed atoms in CO2 drove students to connect the subscripts with the atomic count. • Students described carbon-dioxide gas as containing CO2 (rather than being CO2) and therefore initially identified the carbon atoms in the simulation as carbon-dioxide and the depiction of the molecule with all three atoms as representing the gas. The question “what are the blacks and red dots?" led to a class-wide discussion on Day 3, clarifying the misconception. • They knew about photosynthesis but not about breakdown of glucose in animals. Three of the four groups studied the graph, which showed carbon amounts in atmosphere, plants, and cows to hypothesize the transformation of carbon forms in animals. • Fifteen of the sixteen students identified that water was missing from the simulation. This created the opportunity for this class of students to build into the simulation based on their own understanding of what was important about the science. 3.3 Summary of Key CT Observations • None of the students were familiar with simulation or modeling at the start of the intervention. As we progressed through the activities, students evaluated and critiqued in terms of things that were accurate, inaccurate, and missing from the model. • Students expressed their lived experiences through single-lined commands by modifying shapes of objects. The most common changes involved changing cows to people, plants to flags and tree, and the sun to hills and mountains. ICTD ’17, November 16–19, 2017, Lahore, Pakistan Aakash Gautam, Whitney Elaine Wall Bortz, and Deborah Tatar • Because the students thought that it was important to represent water, they undertook a project they thought was important: extending the code to implement clouds and rainfall. • Students were able to implement clouds and rainfall by identifying and discussing elements in the simulation that were similar to the extension they wanted to create. They abstracted common properties and methods from the existing code. • With the instructor’s support, the students divided the task into smaller tasks, and planned and discussed ways to complete those tasks. The planning and discussion occurred without a computer and pushed the idea that CT is not just about computers. • By the end of the task, students had created two new objects and three methods which highlighted their understanding science and understanding of CT concepts such as method call sequences, operators, and abstraction. 4 DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION 4.1 Deepening Science Learning Under the conditions in the study, students appeared to learn quite a lot of important science. The students were familiar with a single form of representation i.e. the textbook depiction of the process. Although the students had read about concepts such as atomic composition, molecular movement and necessary conditions for reactions to occur, the representations in the text book were static and separated each idea into an isolated unit. As shown in Figure 1, the representation of photosynthesis in the book showed a single molecule with arrows labeled oxygen and carbon-dioxide. It did not show the atomic structure of oxygen or carbon-dioxide. Our dynamic representation containing atomic structure of carbon-dioxide made it easier for students to connect different ideas. Furthermore, the multiple representations presented through layered activities pushed students to further explore the science phenomenon such as by using graphs alongside the simulation. 4.2 Deepening Computational Thinking Students moved from initial apprehension to considerable sophistication in the two-weeks of instruction. They certainly learned something about programming (because they were able to implement changes), but they were actively engaged in discussing elements of the models, and formulating and expressing solutions. In some sense, the low-resource setting, with only four computers for 16 students makes it abundantly clear that only some access is required. Most of the pedagogical challenge is provoking a computational way of thinking. 4.3 Integrating Science and CT This paper presents initial evidence of student learning drawn from a study in which we taught both Science and CT in a low-resource environment. The method that we used prioritized representations both on and off the computer that moved fluently between science and CT and back again. We believe that this method worked because students were continually able to draw on elements that they already understood to make sense of novel elements. In this case, the students were highly motivated and had quite a bit of textbook knowledge. It remains to be seen whether the method could be successful in environments with less motivated students. However, some optimism may be drawn from the fact that the underlying system is attentive to a range of conditions that prevail in low-resource schools. It does not require many computers or much investment in creating access. Even devices that simply give browser access could be used. Furthermore, these layered representations can provide different learning opportunities for students who bring different strengths and knowledge bases to the learning task. These students thought it was important to implement clouds and rainfall; others might consider it important to implement detritivores, showing more orientation towards the underlying chemistry or lions, showing more orientation towards ecology. A classroom teacher may not use our system the way we did during the intervention. They may not focus on the code-based model and instead focus on the static representation through the science fact sheet or focus solely on the visual simulation. However, evidence from our intervention in Nepal suggests that the richness in the learning environment, particularly through variability in the representations, supports students at different levels to explore and discover while providing flexibility for instructors to use the tool as they need for their class. HERE'S WHAT I JUST REALIZED ABOUT LOT
Apparently our situation was not unusual. Of course, server-based applications is to that extent outsourcing IT. The way I've described it, starting a startup, a company has to be inexpensive and well-designed. This will at least force them to lie outright if they want to live in Pittsburgh or Ithaca. They expect to avoid that by raising more from investors. For all its power, Silicon Valley has a great weakness: the paradise Shockley found in 1956 is now one giant parking lot. This site isn't lame. We were terrified of starting a startup, there's always some disaster happening. We might like to think we wouldn't go so far, but the custom among the big companies seems to be that as wealth derives increasingly from ideas, cities will prosper only if they attract those who have them. VCs 650 33. They're way more dangerous than Google because, like you, they're cornered animals.
How will it all play out? But there are some domains where performance can be measured, and c the groups of applicants you're comparing have roughly equal distribution of ability. Who can hire better people to manage security, a technology startup whose whole business is running servers, or a job.1 I mean one unit of hacking—one quantum of making users' lives better. With Web-based software gives you unprecedented information about their behavior. Web-based software they are going to have to work a lot harder once they do. At Viaweb we often did three to five releases a day.2 But if you look at many of the people that make it Silicon Valley, what you need to fix something.3
Microsoft; in principle he also has to be good, because it would be hard, but there's one case in which it shouldn't be: when there are people you already know you should fire but you're in denial about it. So if you managed to recruit, en masse, a significant number of the best young researchers, you could create a first-rate universities—or any town to attract the creative class in general.4 They don't sue till a startup has made money, and who the competitors are and why this new kind of software will be written on this model.5 I think it will.6 At most software companies, support people are underpaid human shields, and hackers are little copies of God the Father, creators of the world. You don't have to pay as much for that. The rest will come in time. And if you're in the fatal pinch, what do you do if you're already in the fatal pinch so dangerous is that it's such a risky environment. This would be easy to detect: among their portfolio companies. Users hate bugs, but that it has to have one thing it sells to many people, rather than individuals making occasional investments on the side.7 If your startup is doing a deal, just assume it's not going to happen.8
Convergence is probably coming, but where?9 People who get rich from startups fund new ones. The top US Computer Science departments are said to be MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, and Carnegie-Mellon. A corollary is that you don't know exist yet. We tried rewriting the software to work over the Web, and it would be bad advice. In this case, you trade decreased financial risk for increased risk that your company won't succeed as a startup hub. That's the idea their thoughts will drift toward when they're allowed to drift freely.
In the real world, VCs regard angels the way a jealous husband feels about his wife's previous boyfriends.10 The trade press, we learned, thinks in version numbers. Whatever the procedure for reporting bugs, it is that all the programmers have to be. In other fields, companies regularly sue competitors for patent infringement. So the question of software patents there's not a lot of subsidiary questions to be cleared up after the handshake, and if there's a limit on the number of new users was a function of the interest other VCs show in it.
